TINGATINGA PAINTINGS GETS “INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION”
Dar es Salaam: Tingatinga paintings which
largely depicts African culture in bold and bright oil colour is now an
international name in the world of arts and culture.
The
style of Tingatinga paintings radiates
the local African attire, be it khanga, vitenge or one-colour Maasai drape, it
brings forth the vibrant local beats of ngoma dances, captures well the “Godly
Gifts” of floral and fauna of Tanzania’s
green forests. Put them altogether and the Beholder will conclude the
Africanism behind the Tingatinga art.
The
seven-days Tingatinga Exhibition which is also a competition among the artists
for paid trip to the People’s Republic of China, was officially opened by the
Principal Secretary of the sponsoring
Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Sihaba Nkinga. She emphasized and clarified that Tingatinga Paintings was
named after the famous Tanzanian artist Edward Tingatinga, a fact which was
misconstrued. The exhibition is also sponsored by the National Arts Council (BASATA), China
Africa Business Council, the National Museum of Tanzania and China-Africa Arts
Centre.
The
joint cooperation of the major sponsors, including the Embassy of the People’s
Republic of China has been well appreciated and recognized by the Director
General of National Museum of Tanzania,
Prof. Audax Z. P. Mabulla. The exhibition is still open up to Saturday.
Around
28 best art works will be adjudicated by a panel of judges and not less
than (estimated) TShs. 10,000,000/= in
cash and material such as bicycles, radios and participation certificates will
be presented to the best painters. The lucky winners will get a paid trip to
China where their works will be on display at an exhibition in China, thus
giving Tingatinga paintings an international recognition.
Several
Chinese Nationals, including the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Hon. Lu
Youqing appeared much impressed by the art works and decided to buy some
of the paintings.
