INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY
The International
Day of Yoga which was passed by the General Assembly of the United
Nations, approved and sanctioned by 177
member states will be officially observed on Sunday (21st June)
throughout the world.
In Dar es Salaam, Coco Beach will be the
venue where Yoga will be talked about and practiced.
Yoga
may appear to be unknown word to many Tanzanians but the Indian acronym is a philosophical word for
conducting physical and mental exercise to uplift the mental well being of a Yogi (person doing the exercise). The
word Yoga is derived from the Indian Sanskrit
language which is said to be one of the world’s oldest language and hence
the practice of this mental plus physical exercise which could be as old as
5,000 years or more.
A
simple routine exercise with proper dietary regime added, with deep concentration as prescribed by the
expert Yogis, can reduce many simple or complicated ailments. Experts say that
the daily worldly tensions and worries are often surmounted by practicing Yoga
exercises either alone or in groups.
A
Yogi from the Indian High Commission based in Dar es Salaam, Deepika Dikshit and Prosperia Mpere spoke in
details about Yoga in an interview aired on Azam TV channel. The interviewer
Patrick Mtembera managed well the question-answer sessions in both the
languages English and Kiswahili. The Yoga Day will be observed on a large scale
at the Coco beach in Dar es Salaam from 7.30 am to 9.00am on Sunday 21st
June. A similar function will also be held at Mwanza and Tanga.
Madame
Deepika said that by following the exact Yoga exercise, the common diabetics
disease can be controlled, to certain
extent, by secretion of insulin from the
pancreas. By following the Water Therapy (although not directly connected with
Yoga), one can control one’s body weight provided water intake is done before taking
meals. She said that warm water should
be preferred in comparison to the habitual cold water.
Prosperia
Mpere who had been doing the exercise for the past three years said that one
big advantage of this exercise is that the limbs and muscles tend to relax and
chances to prolong the span of life follows automatically.
